Struggling to Find Somewhere to Student Accommodation?

You have been accepted into your first place university and you have left your student accommodation or housing search a little late! Not to worry, there are plenty of places in the city that you can find to live in.

First-Year Student Accommodation

Usually, in your first year, most choose to stay in University halls as that is a way to meet other students in your situation, however, there is a rise in private halls, where people tend to live by themselves in studios! This is where you have your own kitchen and bathroom. See the different types of accommodation at the University in this article. Watch the video version

1st step! Contact your University accommodation department ASAP, as they’ll be able to tell you more about their housing allocation process and explain their situation regarding room availability. It is even worth reserving a room before you find out if you have got in at University because that way you can remove your offer rather than create another room for you. This is common practice for many students in the UK.

As an international student, students tend to go straight to the Purpose Built Student Accommodation Sector (PBSA). This is because in order for international students to get their visas, they usually are asked to have their accommodation booked! Watch the video on how to book student accommodation as an international student.

If you’re (very) lucky, you might just get a last-minute space at your university halls. This is likely to be because another student has dropped out. Not only will this make your life much easier and save you time searching for accommodation, but it’ll also mean you’ll be able to secure the room. Although be AWARE it’s likely you’ll need to pay a small fee to secure the room such as your deposit.

If you don’t manage to get into university halls, don’t worry. There are still plenty of options out there, and your university will do everything they can to help you find a room. The best way to start finding out what is out there for students is to start searching sites like this one! This will show you all the letting agents rather than having the ones at the top of Google!

Student Websites

There are plenty of student websites out there, you just have to find the right ones relevant to you, remember you aren’t the first to go through this situation and you won’t be the last, so there are people with you and going through the same situation.

To get the most from these sites, you need to understand what you want from your accommodation. For example, do you want to live with others in a house or do you want to be in a studio by yourself and would you want to be centrally located close to the university? There are a lots of options you have as a student depending on the type of room. See how the different type of room affects you as a student.

Once you know what you want, use the websites, google and other platforms to see and enquire on properties that interest you!

Student Letting Agents

Search for student letting agents in the city, take a look at their websites and the houses they have to offer. Look at how they operate and always give them a call or meet them, this is because student letting agents make up a high proportion of the student experience at university.

Once you have taken a look at their website, looked at a lot of their houses and asked them all the questions you have, you can then make the decision if you want to stay there. By looking at lots of houses and their pictures and descriptions, you can make sure they are consistently good.

Student Accommodation

These are the studios and apartments in the big blocks, very similar to university owned halls, but they are privately managed. The best thing you can do here is look at their website, see what they have available and then head to the specific page related to the city you are looking in! It is likely to be in line with their corporate website, but you can see what they do and what they have and how it might compare to others.

Finally, for both the student letting agents and accommodation, you should always look at their social media, this is where they will publicise their daily life and experiences. Here you will get a very good feeling of what they are like and how they will look after you.

Social Media

Social Media is a good way to see how businesses act and what others say about them on social media. You can get a feel of how they have treated previous experiences and how they are likely to treat you as well. You can also see videos and photos of their houses and see if they are the same as on the website.

You will also be able to see what others post about them in groups and what life is like living with them. See what the experience is like living them and whether it is something you want to experience!
