Does My Loan Cover My Student Accommodation
This is a massive question for every student off to university, how will they find out what their entitlement is and how will they know what house they can book or be able to afford?
To start, your loan or grant may not cover your student accommodation. You will need to be prepared for this, how will you make up a shortfall if there is one? The best way to find out how much you are entitled to from the government is to go to, Student Finance England. Here you will need to submit a series of documents and they will then tell you how much you can claim from the government. This process can be an administrative nightmare, so please start this process early.
Full-time student | 2018 to 2019 academic year | 2019 to 2020 academic year |
---|---|---|
Living at home | Up to £7,324 | Up to £7,529 |
Living away from home, outside London | Up to £8,700 | Up to £8,944 |
Living away from home, in London | Up to £11,354 | Up to £11,672 |
You spend a year of a UK course studying abroad | Up to £9,963 | Up to £10,242 |
Your entitlement will be dependant upon your family income, your income and which university you are off to. If you are off to London, then you will receive a slightly higher accommodation entitlement than those who are outside London.
The income of the household will need to be proved. Student Finance England does receive a lot of requests from students regarding finance and accommodation. To start the process of seeing how much you can get to visit this government website.
Once you have found out how much you are entitled to, you can then search for your house. You will need to breakdown how much you will get per year and make sure that you don’t go over that amount. It’s best to break it down into how much you can afford weekly, which means you can figure that out monthly and yearly cost.
