Hull is a vibrant city, having won the City of Culture, it gained a lot of investment and the university had great benefits from it. Hull University has around 16,000 students and is based in the old quarter of Hull. It has a campus in the city centre and has one in Scarborough which is based on the East coast.
Based just above the Humber estuary and in the East Riding of Yorkshire, it has great access to some landscapes and coastlines. You can read more about Hull here on our page and you can read more about Hull University on our pages here.
Student Accommodation in Hull
This may come as a surprise but there isn’t a lot of student accommodation in Hull that is managed by private providers and this means that if you want something like a studio, your options are reduced compared to if you wanted a studio in a place like Sheffield where there is ample amount. Here I am talking about PBSA.
Why is this? Well, I think it is because Hull is relatively small compared to most universities and the City Centre has had a lot of attraction from the City of Culture and it is hard to get big blocks of student accommodation close to Hull University. It can be done and there are some providers but not as many as in other cities. In the near future, I assume more providers will notice the up and coming city and start looking at how they can start building.
Some of the student accommodation providers in Hull are:
Because there isn’t a massive amount of student accommodation in Hull, students still need places to stay, other than university-owned accommodation, it really only leaves student housing.
There is a good amount of student housing in Hull and it is very reasonably priced.
Some of the main areas students live while studying in Hull are:
Cottingham
Newland Avenue
Princes Avenue
Historic City Centre
Some of the student letting agents and landlords that we like the look of in Hull area:
Hull is split in to two cities, the old and historic quarter and the new quarter. As a student you can live in the Historic quarter, it is the closest to all the nightclubs, pubs and bars but the one that is furthest from the University, it is still only roughly 3km away. A lot of students like this area because it is close to the city centre.
Princes Avenue is a great place if you want something just outside of the city centre but can be in the city in no time what so ever. It can be confused with Newland Avenue because they are very close to each other. Again Hull university is only about 2-3km from here.
Newland Avenue is a little closer, roughly 1km to Hull university and again has a lot of student houses. You typically find this as the sweet spot because rents are a little cheaper than the city centre, but you aren’t too far out. It is surrounded by lots of shops and bars and you can get in to town by buses and taxis mainly.
Finally, Cottingham. This is a little place outside of Hull, it is only still 4km away from University of Hull. Students choose this area because it is quiet, it has a more rural feel and the fact that you can get in to hull by bus, taxi or bike.
The only downside to Hull can be the transport infrastructure. The transport you get in the big cities, London, Leeds, Manchester etc. are better than in Hull. Hull is a smaller city on the east side of Yorkshire and it is still developing its infrastructure.
