Student Accommodation in Manchester

Written by Sam | January 5, 2021

Manchester is a great place to be a student and work. It has three universities, The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan, and The University of Salford. Some may argue that the University of Salford isn’t in Manchester, however, because I see it as a suburb in Manchester but will do a seperate article on the student accommodation in Salford. Manchester is a large and prominent city in the north and because of this it has a good transport system, it is well connected and there are plenty of opportunities for graduates as well.

If you want to know more about Manchester, visit our page on it here and if you want to know more about the universities in Manchester, their strong points, weak points, statistics then you can find that detail here. The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Private Student Accommodation in Manchester

For the student accommodation side, I am really only focusing on Manchester City Centre and what is available to students there rather than Salford. The student accommodation in Manchester is slightly more spread out than other cities but I think that is because of the size of the city, however, most of the accommodation stays around the centre.

All the accommodations have easy access to both of the universities. Because both of the city centre campuses are very close together it’s doesn’t matter which accommodation you choose unless you are not going to be based at the city centre campus.

Manchester for the size of the city and having two universities aren’t as concentrated with student accommodation compared to somewhere like Sheffield. What this means is that there is less supply and slightly less choice. There is still enough accommodation for students however, there is likely to be more demand for better student accommodation.

If you are looking for student accommodation, I would stick to these points:

  • Quality
  • Location
  • Service & Wellbeing
  • Price

Some good student accommodation providers in Manchester are:

This accommodation list is in no order, these are the ones we like and they provide good quality student accommodation and service.

With these types of student accommodation, they come with a higher price because they usually have a good location in the city centre and have lots of added extras, such as gym, cinema, study room, grab and go breakfasts and bikes to use.

Student Housing in Manchester

As a student if you are looking for something that is cheaper, then you will look at house shares and renting from a letting agent or landlord. Renting student housing gives you more option on location, room size, type however, it doesn’t come with the added extra and are usually based outside of the centre of Manchester.

The most common areas students live are:

  • City Centre
  • Fallowfield
  • Rusholme
  • Oxford Road
  • Hulme

All these areas are located in the suburbs of Manchester yet close to the city centre and they all have good access to transport. This makes it easier for you to get to university. A lot of students choose the south of the city because in the north you can have a bit more competition from those wanting to go to Salford University, not a problem, however you need to be quick. The city centre is going to be the most expensive due to location and the other areas are mainly terraced houses or old period houses that have been converted. I would say Fallowfield is the largest out of all of the places where student stay.

Most students in Manchester start looking for the following years’ accommodation in November and December. Only a small percentage will book, however, it is a good time to look and start your research.

Some good student letting agents and landlords that offer good student houses are:

There is plenty of student housing in Manchester, some of it is good quality and then there is some that you don’t want to live in. Make sure you do your research, go and view the houses and make sure you get with a good quality student letting agent or landlord.
