Student Accommodation in Newcastle

Written by Sam | January 5, 2021

Newcastle has two universities, it has Northumbria University and Newcastle University. They both have campuses in the city centre and campuses around Newcastle. Like every other city, it has a lot of suburbs where students live and prefer because they are student areas.

Because of the two universities, it attracts a lot of students and has a good transport infrastructure with lots of activities to do. You can find more detail about Newcastle on our page and if you want to know about the universities such, as statistics, the number of students, and other ratings, find more on Newcastle University & Northumbria University. Newcastle always has good ratings from students who go to either university.

For this section I will look at what is on offer to you as a student just in terms of PBSA (Purpose Built Student Accommodation), these are the big blocks they build purposefully for students and are usually located in and around the centre of the city.

Student Housing in Newcastle

Just like Sheffield, Nottingham, and other cities that have two universities they all have plenty of student accommodation. Newcastle has a lot of terraced and large period houses that have been split into separate rooms for students.

The main areas that students tend to live are:

  • Jesmond
  • Heaton
  • Sandyford
  • City Centre

These are typically the more popular areas, there are places just to the West like Arthurs Hill which is slightly more residential but still contains students. Jesmond & Heaton are the largest areas and have the most student houses in them.

Rents in Newcastle are reasonable for the infrastructure of the city due to it being in the North however, it is more than the average because it is a main city with a big presence in the North.

Some good student letting agents and landlords in Newcastle:

There is plenty of student letting agents in Newcastle and landlords, however, these are the ones we like and have come across that have quality properties with good service. If you are a student and want to recommend an agent or landlord, then please email us.

Similar to the student accommodation, most students start looking and viewing student houses in Newcastle around November and December time. Some book when they find a good student house and some wait and view more to know their options. To help you find a good student house follow these steps:

  • Research the house and agent/landlord
  • Always view if you can
  • View more than one house from one agent
  • Know what you value most (price, location, room size etc)
  • Read the tenancy before booking

You can find a more in-depth process in our articles, but this should keep you on a good track.

There is a lot of student housing in Newcastle, however, not all of it is good quality, and the ones that aren’t try to charge the same amount as those who do have good quality housing, make sure you stay away from these types of student houses!
