Student Accommodation in Falmouth

Written by Sam | March 1, 2021

Falmouth is based in Cornwall and is home to Falmouth University. Around 5,000 students are based there and this makes it a smaller university than most others, however, it makes up for that in character and location!

Falmouth has a smaller collection of courses but what you get here is far more contact time with lecturers and a more personal experience. Because it is based in Cornwall it feels like life is a little bit slower than living in a city.

Most are based at the larger out-of-town Penryn Campus, shared with the University of Exeter and largely designed to boost hitherto limited higher educational provision within Cornwall.

Private Student Accommodation in Falmouth

In this section, I look at purpose-built student accommodation in Falmouth and these are big blocks of studios and flats that are specifically for students. They aren’t managed by the university but are managed or owned by private companies.

This type of student accommodation comes with a lot of added extras such as:

  • Bills inclusive
  • Accommodation manager
  • Bikes to use
  • Free breakfasts
  • No deposits
  • Games, study, gym and cinema rooms
  • En-suite
  • Social events
  • On-site maintenance
  • CCTV

There are more that you can get and not every accommodation will have all of these in it, however these are some of the add-ons that you can get.

However, this does come at a price and the price of this student accommodation in Falmouth is more expensive than student housing in Falmouth. It is up to you what you want.

Map of student accommodation in Falmouth

The student accommodation is spread out between Falmouth and Penryn, Penryn has a campus there which makes sense, most of these are university-owned though and not companies. Wherever they are based they are close to the local train station and based close to the centre of town.

Because of the size of Falmouth, it hasn’t got many student accommodation providers in the area and this might change as it grows. Most of the students live in University student accommodation or move in to student housing.

The rent in Falmouth is lower than the average and has a very good cost of living as a student. Not to mention you are surrounded by amazing scenery and the sea!

Student Housing in Falmouth

Because there isn’t a lot of choice in terms of student accommodation in Falmouth, it means that students will either stay in university-owned or move to student housing within the area.

You can choose to live in either Falmouth or Penryn. Penryn is quieter than Falmouth but it is close to university. If you are living in Falmouth, getting to Penryn takes around 20 minutes by bus and you are closer to more shops, pubs and activity.

Penryn is probably more residential than a student but the houses are slightly nicer and bigger. In Falmouth, the houses can be a little smaller as they are closer to the town centre and likely to be a little more expensive.

The places where you will find most students are:

  • Falmouth Town Centre
  • Penryn
  • Old Hill

The cost of living is very good here and I would suggest that you find a house that is close to a bus stop for the ease of getting to university if you are near Penryn. You might be able to get a train there but I think they are less frequent than the buses.

The thing I like most about the houses in this area are that they are close to some amazing beaches and that they have a seaside vibe in all the properties!

Some good student lettings agents and landlords in Falmouth are:

This isn’t an exhaustive list and there are more in the area, however, if you are searching for good student housing in Falmouth or Penryn then here are some quick tips for you:

  • Make sure you view the house
  • Read the inventory
  • Check the quality of the mattress, desk, kitchen and bathrooms
  • Make sure it’s designed well and is functional
  • Read the tenancy agreement before booking
  • Make sure they are signed up with a deposit protection scheme
  • Make sure everyone can fit in the communal areas
