Student Accommodation in Guildford

Written by Sam | March 3, 2021

Guildford is home to the University of Surrey which is set next to Surrey Hills and is a short train journey to London and a slightly longer to the south coast of Brighton.

The University of Surrey has around 14,000 full time students (Times Higher Education) and has been rising steadily through the ranks. Currently it is ranked by the Times Higher Education as 43rd in the Young University rankings and 251-300th in the world!

Most of the courses here are around Business, Sciences and Engineering.

Guildford being in the position it has plenty of options for students to keep themselves busy, it’s not a big university city like Sheffield, Leeds or Nottingham that have multiple universities, however, there are good transport links and the campus is a few minutes walk into the centre of town.

Private Student Accommodation in Guildford

In this section I like to look at what student accommodation there is in Guildford that isn’t owned or managed by the university.

This type of student accommodation can come with a lot of extras, some of these are:

  • Accommodation manager
  • Social events
  • Bills included
  • Free breakfasts
  • Bikes to use
  • Cinema, study and games rooms
  • on-site maintenance

Not all accommodations will offer these, some will and some will only offer some of this. However, the one downside is that all this can come at a cost and it is usually higher than student housing in Guildford.

As a student, it’s up to you where and what you live in.

From what you can see below, it looks like there is a lot of student accommodation in Guildford, however, there only a small amount of providers. This shows us that a lot of students either stay in university owned or managed accommodation or they go to student housing.

All the student accommodation is based in and around the town centre and close to the train station.

Surrey sports park is a little bit further out than the campus however transport to and from there is easy with bike paths and buses. It’s probably a 15 minute walk from campus!

Because there are only a small amount of private student accommodations in Guildford, you would assume that students either stay in university halls/ accommodation or move to student housing.

In Guildford there are plenty of student houses to choose from and because of the are, they are either usually big houses that have been converted or flats in and around the city centre.

The best places to live as a student in Guildford are:

  • St Lukes Square
  • Town Centre

As Guildford isn’t a huge place, you can find student houses all around the centre of town and university. If they are 20 minutes plus outside of town I would be looking for something closer.

I would say rents in Guildford start around the £80 mark and go up. It depends on the location, size of the room and who it is with.

Most students who start searching for student housing in Guildford do so around late November and early December. They can book then or they can book in the new year. Both are fine!
