Student Accommodation in Lancaster
Lancaster University for me is a university that gets overlooked, it is currently ranked 136th in the world, which is a good position and attracts around 13,000 full time students a year.
This is a good sized university nestled in a very scenic part of the UK.
Lancaster University is one of just a few universities within the UK to have a collegiate system. It is home to nine colleges overall, eight for undergraduate students and one for postgraduates.
However, there is more than one university in Lancaster, there are actually two, Lancaster University and University of Cumbria
Lancaster itself is a smaller place than the typical university city. It still has plenty of activities to keep students busy and options to eat and drink.

Private Student Accommodation in Lancaster
In this section, I like to look at what student accommodation there is in Lancaster that isn’t owned or managed by the university. It’s known as Purpose Built Student Accommodation or PBSA for short.
This type of student accommodation has a lot of positives such as:
- City centre living
- Accommodation manager
- Bills included
- Social events
- En-suite in flats
- Bikes to use
- Free breakfasts
- Gym, cinema, study & games rooms
- CCTV
There are many more bonuses that you can get by living in PBSA, it is worth mentioning that not everyone will offer all of this in every accommodation. It is definitely worth seeing what each accommodation has on offer. The only downside is that it is more expensive than student housing in Lancaster.
All the student accommodation is based in the centre of the town and down the road from the university, they are all close to the train station and just over the road from the magnificent scenery!
To get to the university you can cycle down paths or you can get the bus, you can walk but it is likely a bit far.

There are more student accommodations in Lancaster, however, these are the ones that I like!
When you are searching for student accommodation for second year, then most students start their search late November or December.
However, if you are planning to move into student accommodation for your first year then it’s best to start looking in January and booking around May time to make sure you get in early before the room types go.
If you are searching for student accommodation in Lancaster and want to make sure that you find a good quality place then here are some quick tips:
- Always look at the quality of the bed, desk, kitchen and bathroom
- Check the amount of storage
- Make sure the communal rooms can get more than one person in
- Look at the social calendar
- Look at more than one room
- Always view more than one accommodation

Student Housing in Lancaster
For those students who don’t want to live in student accommodation or university managed student accommodation, they will move in to student housing.
This usually happens after their first year and if you want to move in to student housing you should probably start researching and viewing in late November and early December.
The reason for this is because that many students start then and they start booking the best student accommodation and it becomes a race to the bottom.
The average price of student housing in Lancaster is between £90-110 per week. This includes bills as well. If bills aren’t included then I would expect rent to be cheaper.
The best areas to live in Lancaster as a student are:
- Prospect Street
- Greaves Road
- River Lune
- City Centre
Greaves road is the closest to Lancaster University and means you can have a lie in but is the furthest away from town. The other areas are based around the town centre and close to the city centre campus.
Living in and around the city centre will be the most expensive, due to the location, however, you will find being next to the university on Greaves Road will also be slightly higher because of it’s location.
