Student Accommodation in Newcastle Under Lyme

Written by Sam | March 19, 2021

Newcastle Under Lyme, not to be confused with Newcastle Upon Tyne sits just outside of Stoke. It is home to Keele university.

Keele is best known for it’s science and innovation park which in turn relates to it’s quality within science courses.

The university itself sits in the middle of a 630 acre estate surrounded by woods, lakes and parkland.

It ranks quite well each year in the Times Higher Education rankings and never falls out of the bracket. It puts a lot of time, effort, and money into it’s research and is a very eco-conscious campus.

Keele University sits outside the main areas of Stoke and Newcastle (under lyme), however there is good transport around, with M6 being very close and train stations. However, you won’t really need to leave campus too much as they have most of everything on site!

If you want to read more about Keele as a university and what it is like, this page will help you: Keele University as a student.

However, if you want to read more about the area where Keele is found, what you can do and where you can go, this page will help you: Newcastle Under Lyme

Private Student Accommodation in Newcastle Under Lyme

In this section I like to look at what student accommodation is in the area, by this I look at what student accommodation isn’t managed or owned by the university.

This is called Purpose Built Student Accommodation because it is built and designed for students and no one else. There are a lot of benefits to this type of student accommodation, such as:

  • City centre location
  • Bills included
  • En-suites in flats
  • Accommodation manager
  • Free breakfasts
  • Free coffee
  • Study, gym, cinema and games rooms
  • Social events
  • On-site maintenance
  • CCTV

There are many more plus points that some accommodations have. It is worth mentioning that not every accommodation will offer everything on the list, it depends what space they have!

The only downside is that all this comes at a higher price than student housing. This decision lies with you!

All the student accommodation for Keele university, other than halls, is predominantly based in Newcastle Under Lyme, this means that it is a small commute away from the university, however, there are buses that go along the route and can get you to university.

If you have your car there is some parking at the university, however, the problem is being able to park at your accommodation.

All the student accommodation is based around the town centre which means it is close to all the local transport and shops. It also means if you are going for a night out, it isn’t far to walk and the university is just a small taxi ride away.

Also from Newcastle, you can also get in to stoke really easy and that has plenty more to do!

Some good student accommodation providers in Newcastle are:

There aren’t actually that many in Newcastle, however, there are more in Stoke on Trent and I will link the page here when I have written it up!

If you are wanting to live in Stoke and travel to Keele University, please be aware of the commute.

As a student searching for student accommodation and wanting to find a good place, here are some tips to help you:

  • Always view the property
  • Check the quality of the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens
  • Check the social calendar
  • Read the tenancy agreement and cancellation policy
  • Make sure the communal spaces are fit for purpose and big enough

Student Housing in Newcastle Under Lyme

With the amount of student accommodation in Newcastle being fairly low, I assume a lot of students either stay on campus as it’s easy or they move in to student house.

The university has around 10,000 students there and they need somewhere to live if they don’t live in the immediate area.

The best places to live as a student around Keele university are:

  • Silverdale
  • Knutton
  • Chesterton
  • Keele Road
  • Newcastle Under Lyme

I would say Silverdale is the most popular because of where it is located, Newcastle is the furthest from the university, however, closest to the town.

If you are going to be living in a house then I would say that the rent is usually around £50-60 without bills and then £60-80 with bills, it does depends where you live and how luxurious you go!

Here are some good student letting agents or housing providers for Keele University:

There are more in the area that you can use, however, these are the ones that I think have some good student housing on offer.

It is always worth doing your own research when searching for housing, however, to make sure you find a good place to stay here are some quick tips:

  • Always view the property
  • Check the quality of the bedrooms
  • Make sure the kitchens and bathrooms are designed well
  • Is the house functional or is everything squashed in
  • Read the tenancy agreement
  • Check deposit protection scheme registration
  • Can everyone fit in the communal areas
