Student Accommodation in Southampton

Written by Sam | March 29, 2021

Southampton is a major place on the south coast of England. It is home to a lot of sailing members due to it having the Solent running through it.

Southampton has a lot of activities to do, good transport infrastructure with plenty of train stations and lots of nice scenery including the sea which is one of the perks of being a student in Southampton!

The university is based north of the town centre which splits some of the student accommodation because some prefer to be in the centre and others want to be closer to the university.

The university is ranked very well, it is 127th in the world according to times higher education and has just under 24,000 full time students. This is a good sized university as many universities don’t have such numbers.

Private Student Accommodation in Southampton

In this section I like to look at what private student accommodation is in Southampton that isn’t owned or managed by the university.

This type of student accommodation is known as Purpose Built Student Accommodation and is built specifically with students in mind.

There are plenty of benefits to this type of student accommodation and some of these are:

  • Accommodation manager
  • CCTV
  • Social events
  • Bills included
  • Contents insurance
  • Bikes to use
  • Free breakfasts
  • Free coffe
  • Gyms, study, cinema and games rooms

There are more benefits, however, not every student accommodation will offer all of these perks because it ultimately depends upon their budget and space.

The only downside of all these can be the price of some of these places, they can be very costly than the student housing in the area, however, as a student it is up to you to decide what you prefer!

The commute to university isn’t bad at all, even if you are in town it would be a 30-40 minute walk from the bottom end, however there are plenty of cycle routes and buses going to university.

Student Housing in Southampton

With the amount of students in Southampton, they are going to need somewhere to stay and admittedly there is quite a lot of student accommodation as above, however, there will also be a lot of university owned halls.

Many students will move to student housing because the price is cheaper, they can choose the amount of beds they need and the location they prefer.

The majority of the time, choosing a student house gives you the greater option of landlord or agent than student accommodation.

Best places to live as a student in Southampton are:

  • Portswood
  • Swaythling
  • Highfield
  • Bassett
  • Shirley and the city centre

Portswood is probably the biggest student area because of it’s closest to some to most of the Soutampton campuses in the area and it’s mixed with relatively big houses!

City centre is the most expensive because of it’s location but it is closer to everything you want to be close to.

The average student rent for student is around £80-95 per week without bills included, with bills included it will be slightly higher.
