Student Accommodation in Stirling

Written by Sam | March 30, 2021

Stirling is in mid-Scotland, I would say, it forms a triangle between Glasgow and Edinburgh. However, it is home to the University of Stirling.

Stirling is ranked between 301-350th in the world by the Times Higher Education. They also report that they have around 10,000 full time students.

This is fair sized university and it has been growing for several years. The only issue is that it is shadowed by the two larger cities and universities of Scotland, they are Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Stirling is known most likely for it’s sport, however it is a very research intensive university.

The university also has other campuses – one in the Highlands, which offers a wide variety of medicine and teaching courses, and another in the Western Isles, situated close to Stornoway.

Private Student Accommodation in Stirling

In this section I like to look at what student accommodation is in Stirling that isn’t owned or managed by the university. This type of student accommodation is generally known as Purpose Built Student Accommodation.

It can come with a lot of added extras which are designed specifically students, for example:

  • Accommodation manager
  • Social events
  • CCTV
  • On-site maintenance
  • Free breakfasts
  • Free coffee
  • Gym, cinema, study and games rooms
  • Bikes to use
  • Contents insurance

There are many more added extras, however, you need to remember that not every accommodation will offer everything on the list, it depends on their budget and space.

The accommodation is split between the town centre and the actual university. There will be university owned accommodation on campus which is what a lot of students might stay in because of the commute.

Either end that you live in, you are connected to public transport, Scotland can be quite rural and therefore struggle to get to transport!

By choosing to live in the centre of stirling it does mean that you are close to the shops, pubs and all the other activities, whereas if you live on campus you only have the university facilities.

You should start searching for student accommodation in the January before you start university. This way it gives chance to those already in to re-book and then you can look at all the room types and accommodations in the area.

Most of these will ask you to book online so they can correlate everything.

The average rent for student accommodation in Stirling is around about £180 per week. This will be cheaper for en-suite rooms and more expensive for larger and more luxurious studios.

Some good student accommodation providers in Stirling are:

There are more in the area, however, these are the ones that I think offer good standard.

When searching, if you want to make sure that you find a good accommodation, here are some quick tips to help:

Student Housing in Stirling

Even though it has some student accommodation and university halls / accommodation, students still need plenty places to stay.

Best areas to live as a student in Stirling are:

  • Cornton
  • Craigmill
  • Cambuskenneth

These areas are in between the university and the centre of the city. This gives you options in case you want to go and do something in the city or you need to go to university.

The expensive areas will be in the city centre or directly around the university. These areas will be slightly cheaper because they are based in the suburbs.

You will find smaller shops in the local areas, however, the bigger ones are closer to the city centre.

The average rent for students in Stirling should be between £80-100 per week without bills included. With bills included it might go over £100 but it shouldn’t be by a lot.

Some good student housing providers in Stirling are:

There are more student letting agents or HMO agents in Stirling, however, these are the ones that I think offer good housing to students.

As always please don’t take my word for it, please do the research as well and here are some tips to make sure you get a good house:

  • Always view the property
  • Check all the bedrooms
  • Make sure the fixtures and fittings are quality
  • Review the inventory
  • Read their tenancy
  • Is it designed well and functional?
  • Is there enough space in the communal areas for everyone?

If you want more detail then please read this article which will help: How to find your next student accommodation.

When searching for student housing, most students start their search in late November or December and if they find a good house they will book it due to the fear of it not being available later on and this usually leads to a slight rush and agents selling out early!
