Student Accommodation in Strathclyde

Written by Sam | March 31, 2021

Strathclyde is ultimately a part of Glasgow and in Glasgow you have Glasgow University and the University of Strathclyde.

In Glasgow you have a lot of student accommodation because there are multiple universities and lots of students that need somewhere to live.

Glasgow is a well-known city in Scotland and has several Universities there, you have the University of GlasgowStrathclyde University, and Glasgow Caledonian University. You also have a campus for the University of Highlands and Islands.

University of Glasgow is the largest in respect of the student population with 26,500 students and is ranked 92nd in the world by Times Higher Education in 2021 and Glasgow Caledonian University has 13,00 students.

Glasgow is on the west side of Scotland, pretty much opposite Edinburgh and is one of the major cities in Scotland. This means that as a student here you get the perks of having better transport, more places to eat, more places to eat out and more pubs to visit. You also can be in rural parts of Scotland within in an hour in some directions.

Private Student Accommodation in Strathclyde

In this section, I look at what student accommodation there is in Strathclyde. This is accommodation that isn’t owned or managed by universities they are owned or managed by companies specifically for students.

This type of student accommodation can come with a lot of advantages, such as:

  • Accommodation manager
  • Social events
  • En-suites in flats
  • Gym, cinema, study and games rooms
  • Free breakfasts
  • Free bikes to use
  • Contents insurance
  • Free coffee

There will be more to that list and not every student accommodation will offer all the services, they are just an example of what I have seen. The only downside is that they come at a cost. As a student, it is up to you to decide what you want to live in!

All the student accommodation has very good access to public transport, in particular, train stations and the airport isn’t far away. All the student accommodation in Glasgow is actually based around the city centre campuses, you are able to walk to either one no matter which accommodation you are in.

Student Housing in Strathclyde

Due to the many students in the city, like many other cities there are really three categories for student accommodation, University owned, private student accommodation and student housing.

There is plenty of student housing in Glasgow, more than enough for students, the problem that comes down to it is the quality. All the good quality student housing gets taken the moment it becomes available due to the fear of not being able to get it later.

Most students in Glasgow start searching for student housing in late November or December, some will book when they find a good place and others will book in the new year, both are fine!

The best places to live as a student in Glasgow are:

  • Hillhead
  • Anniesland
  • Partick
  • City Centre
  • Denistoun
  • Finneston

All these areas are close to the city centre, most you can walk into the city and if you can’t you will be able to get a bus or train into the city that will only be a few minutes long!

The most expensive in the city centre due to its location. All these areas also have good access to supermarkets and the essentials as a student.

Denistoun is on the east side of the city and Finneston is on the west side. You can access all the universities if they are on the opposite side of the city it just makes your commute a bit longer.

Some good student housing providers in Glasgow are:

There are more student letting agents in Glasgow, however, these are the one that I think have good student houses!
