Student Accommodation in Swansea

Written by Sam | April 2, 2021

Swansea is based in Wales, it sits in the south west of the country and is the second largest city in Wales after Cardiff.

It is home to Swansea University, it is ranked 251-300th in the world, which is a very good ranking. It is home to around 17,000 full time students according to the Times Higher Education.

It is a good place to go to university because you have access to some fabulous country side, however, you get the city feeling because you are in Swansea. As soon as you leave Swansea you will stumble across many beautiful sights.

If you have never been or heard the Welsh accent before, then some people are fascinated by it and they do have their own language which isn’t spoken too widely anymore, it is more English.

There is plenty to keep you busy in Swansea and they have a plethora of pubs, bars and clubs for those who like the night life and if you are a sports fan, it has some great places to go and see live sport.

Private Student Accommodation in Swansea

In this section, I like to look at what student accommodation there is in Swansea. This is student accommodation that isn’t owned or managed by the university.

This type of accommodation is usually known as Purpose Built Student Accommodation and is designed specifically for students.

It can come with a lot of added extras, some of these are:

  • Accommodation manager
  • CCTV
  • Social events
  • Free coffee
  • Free breakfasts
  • Bikes to use
  • Contents insurance
  • En-suites in flats
  • Bills included
  • Gym, cinema, study and games rooms

There are many more that I will have missed, however, not every student accommodation will be able to offer everything on the list due to money and space in the accommodation.

All the student accommodation in Swansea is based around the city centre, Swasea university is based in the bottom left hand corner of the map, this means that the accommodation that is furthest away is the True Building.

They all have good access to shops, train stations and bus stations, with it being in the south as well, you can get in to England and travel around England with relative ease as well.

As an international student you can also fly in to Swansea or Cardiff and the travel isn’t bad at all

Student Housing in Swansea

Because there are only several student accommodations in Swansea, I assume that many students move from university halls into student housing.

Swansea has a city feel but isn’t a big city like Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and all those cities, you can live quite close to the city centre and still get good value on your rent.

However, the best places to live in Swansea as a student are:

  • Uplands
  • Brynmill
  • Bay Campus
  • Sketty

Brynmill, Sketty and Uplands are closest to the main university they are also not too far from the city centre which are why they are popular areas.

They are usually spacious houses in those areas and usually go from 3 beds and up.

Average rent for a student house in Swansea is around £85 per month without bills. With bills it would be around £100 per month which is good value in a city.

The further out you go, the cheaper the rent will be.

When searching for student housing, a lot of students tend to start searching in late November and December, if they find a house, they then usually book it so they won’t lose it, this then causes a mini rush.

Make sure you do your research before you book!

Some good student housing providers in Swansea are:

These a re just some of the agents and landlords in Swansea, however, these are the ones that I like and think do a good job. Please make sure you do your own research!

When searching for student housing in Swansea and you want to find a good quality house, here are some quick tips:

  • Always view the house
  • Make sure it is functional and designed well
  • Check the amount of storage in rooms
  • Make sure it has good fixtures and fittings
  • Is house maintained well?
  • Read the inventory
  • Read the tenancy agreement
