Student Accommodation in Wolverhampton

Written by Sam | April 7, 2021

Wolverhampton is based just west of Birmingham and is home to the University of Wolverhampton.

It ranks 801-1000th in the world rankings by Time Higher Education and is home to around 14,000 full time students with approximately 21% of those being international students, according to the Times Higher Education.

That’s a good size university considering it is close to Birmingham which will attract a lot of students.

Including its main site in the city centre, the university has four main campuses. The site in nearby Walsall features a multimillion pound sports centre and a performing arts hub. A new science centre, featuring high specification laboratory and workshop space, was opened in September 2017.

Wolverhampton itself is well connected with transport, you can fly in to Birmingham which has a good airport, failing that, it can be Manchester but that is a fair train journey away.

To find out more about Wolverhampton, including what you can do, transport and it’s history, this page will help: Wolverhampton as a student

When you come to look at universities, this page has some key statistics, information about the university and the local area: University of Wolverhampton

Private Student Accommodation in Wolverhampton

In this section, I like to look at what student accommodation there is in Swansea. This is student accommodation that isn’t owned or managed by the university.

This type of accommodation is usually known as Purpose Built Student Accommodation and is designed specifically for students.

It can come with a lot of added extras, some of these are:

  • Accommodation manager
  • CCTV
  • Social events
  • Free coffee
  • Free breakfasts
  • Bikes to use
  • Contents insurance
  • En-suites in flats
  • Bills included
  • Gym, cinema, study and games rooms

There are many more that I will have missed, however, not every student accommodation will be able to offer everything on the list due to money and space in the accommodation.

There aren’t too many private student accommodations in Wolverhampton as there are quite a few university halls. There are some and they are based close to the city centre and the university. I would say both are within 10 minutes walk of each!

When searching for accommodation, it is best to start looking for student accommodation in the January before you start in September. This will give those enough time to re-book and then you can search for the rooms you want.

The average rent in Wolverhampton for student accommodation should be around £80 per week for an en-suite and around £120 for a studio.

Good student accommodation providers in Wolverhampton are:

Because of the small amount of private student accommodation providers in Wolverhampton it probably means that students will stay in accommodation for 3 years, or move in to student housing which I will cover below!

It does restrict you on choices and if there are more students wanting to book than beds, they can effectively choose a higher price as such. However, prices are very reasonable in Wolverhampton!

If you are searching for student accommodation and you want to make sure that you end up in a good place here are some quick tips:

  • Always view the accommodation
  • Check the quality of the bed, desk and en-suite
  • Make sure it is designed well and functional
  • Read the tenancy agreement
  • Check the cancellation policy
  • Make sure the buildings communal areas are fit for purpose
  • Look at the social events

Student Housing in Wolverhampton

Because of the amount of private student accommodation in the area. It means that there is a good amount of demand for student housing in Wolverhampton.

As a student this means you will have plenty of options over area, letting agent and landlord. It also means that the standard will be high due to competition and it should cap prices.

Best places to live as a student in Wolverhampton

  • City Centre
  • Gorway Road
  • Whitmore Reams/ Staveley Road

These areas are great for students because they are close to shops, town centre and the university. They make life easy as a student.

The rents in these are quite good, city centre will be the most expensive, however, the further out you go, the better rent you will get.

Average rent in Wolverhampton as a student should be around £60-70 without bills. If you are having bills included, it should be a little bit more expensive. However, I haven’t see many rents that are above £100 per week with bills included that are a house share!

Good student housing providers in Wolverhampton are:

These are just some that I have found, please make sure that before you book, you do all the research on the properties and agents or landlords.

When you come round to searching for your next student house, most will start searching in late November and December and if they see a good student house, they will book it for the fear of it not being there when they want to book it. This does lead to a mini rush, however, there are plenty of houses in Wolverhampton for students.

When searching for student housing in Wolverhampton and you want to find a good quality house, here are some quick tips:

  • Always view the house
  • Make sure it is functional and designed well
  • Check the amount of storage in rooms
  • Make sure it has good fixtures and fittings
  • Is house maintained well?
  • Read the inventory
  • Read the tenancy agreement
  • Check any accreditations with councils and deposit schemes
  • Understand the cancellation policy
