Hello Student Review

Written by Sam | August 11, 2021

In this blog, what I want to do is review Hello Student. I don’t want to review each one of their locations because they might add or take some away, however, they will all be a reflection of their brand and company that sits behind the student accommodation.

If there is something you want to know and I haven’t included it, please let me know and then I can add it into this review and future ones!

The Company: Hello Student

Hello Student is a company that don’t manage the really big blocks and as far as I’m aware they don’t develop them. They are a management company that manage some smaller blocks, quite a few houses and some big blocks whereas the usual providers don’t get involved with smaller blocks or housing.

Before I have done a lot of reviews on the big accommodation providers, developers and managers, however, Hello Student are slightly different.

They offer good student housing and accommodation which is aimed towards the more luxurious end of the spectrum.

Hello Students motto is – Creating Homes, not Halls. Which I do agree with, they do create some very nice spaces. They aim to find spaces in boutique areas of the city and then offer something unique to students.

As a company, they put a lot of effort into how their spaces look, feel and work. Their aim is to give students confidence that they will do a good job and it does look that way, they have a good website and have a lot of resources on there in regards to 24/7 landlord support, mental health and other support functions.

Finally, as a company they want everything to be simple and they have all bills included including contents insurance, which means that really you should only have a few payments for your housing. Keeping it simple.

For me, I quite like their ethos, it’s good, it’s positive and is refreshing. There are more and more landlords who are taking this approach and it is good to see!

Accommodation Review

I can’t review each one of their student accommodations, however, I will look at them and give you a general overview.

The main points I go on about a lot is design, quality and experience. These accommodations are designed well and kitted out with some really good looking fixtures and fittings. By this I mean they have good kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms.

Like many other good quality providers, they have a focus on social spaces and making sure that they are functional for students to socialise, because whats the point if not? They are big areas and offer a good variety where they can.

If you are choosing to live in a house, you won’t have the same options as if you were living in a block. You are more likely to have a big living room and not a gym, cinema or study room.

I do quite like their designs they are clean and simple in a lot of their studios and shared apartments. Their rooms look very functional and this makes it really easy to live in. If you look at some of their studios, they have enough space to move around with plenty of storage and good amount of kitchen worktop, including a place to sit and eat food!

Their houses look well kept and designed well, these are slightly harder to make really good because they all have their own unique quirks, however, again they design them well, put everything you expect in there as a student and design them well so that they aren’t boring to look at.

Below see what you get included in the accommodation in Portsmouth:

Processes and Systems

This is probably the less exciting part of the review, however, it is one that should hold a big weight in your decision.

Cancellation – If the cancellation is genuine, then the policy is really quite flexible, especially if you give enough time to re-book the room. For example, if you didn’t get the grades, a visa or had to drop out for an extenuating circumstance then they are really helpful. For a genuine cancellation it could cost you nothing, however, if you have decided not to attend or switch to another provider then you would be held to your signed contract. If they can fill your room or you have someone else to move in, it could mean a full take over of the contract and no money lost. However, unless it’s for a genuine reason I think that is completely fair.

Please make sure that you read the cancellation policy before you book!

Booking – We don’t work directly with Hello Student, however, if you want to book on of their student properties you do it through their website. After that you are most likely going to need a deposit and guarantor details if they are required.

Communications with students – I am unsure as haven’t heard too much, but as an assumption it looks good. They oviously have their own portal, however, I would expect them to have their own groups for their accommodations.

Events – They host a lot of events, whether you are in a house or in a studio, there will be events you can get involved in. Make sure you stay up to date.

Summary

With Hello Student, I like what they offer to students. This does come at a price and it means that it can be on the higher end which can price out a lot of students, however, if you are able to afford this it’s not a bad choice.

They don’t manage massive blocks, they keep everything boutique and offer different options in terms of studios, apartments and houses.

They put a big enmphasis on their rooms, design, student experience and keeping everything simple by including as much as possible in one payment.

They also span quite a few cities and have several options in those cities, but they do go fast so make sure that if you like them you get a viewing quickly and see if you want to book it.
