Why do Students Use Bill Management Companies
As a student, why would you use a bill management company?
Well, firstly I’ll cover what is a bill management company – just in case you haven’t heard of them before!
Bill Management Company
Well, they are companies that look after your bills. They are just for students, they are for anyone that shares a house.
By look after your bills I mean, they will set up, manage and close down the bills on your or the landlord’s behalf.
If you have any problems you will go to them rather than the actual provider and the big difference is that you are all in a contract with the management company to pay them and they are in contract with the utility company.
Why Do Student’s Use Them?
Here are the main reasons why students like to use bill management companies rather than do it themselves.
- The ability to split the bill with every student in the house
- Flexibility of contracts
- Less hassle
- Everyone can report issues
I think that’s everything. However, the big two reasons are the fact that you can split the bill and it’s less hassle for the one person that has to set up and close down the bills.
A lot of arguments arise when it comes down to money and bills. This way, you remove the friction.
My point about contracts is that when you are searching around utility companies they usually have a 1 or 2 year lock-in period and if you aren’t going to be there that long then it’s a lot of money to pay when you might not be there.
By using a bill management company, they might be able to access shorter and more student-friendly contract lengths.
Do They Charge?
Bill management companies can and do charge, which is only fair if they are managing your bills. Some of the ways that I know about:
- Charging a fee per month added on to your bill
- They can charge the landlord instead – this is more than likely to be included in the rent somewhere!
If the landlord wants to have the bills included they are more likely to charge them than you the student, but as I say it probably is reflected in the rent.
The fee isn’t a lot – it’s usually somewhere in the region of £10 roughly per month.
Why Wouldn’t You Use a Bill Management Company?
Well for me it only comes down to a few reasons and they are:
- You don’t want to pay them for it
- You live by yourself
- You have bills included
- You get on well with everyone in the house
If there are a lot of people in the house and everyone is relatively new to the situation then having a bills management company is something that might be worth considering so there aren’t any fallouts about money.
