Officially Dundee is Scotland’s fourth-largest city and the 51st-most-populous built-up area in the United Kingdom.
It lies within the eastern central Lowlands on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, which feeds into the North Sea.
Today, Dundee is promoted as “One City, Many Discoveries” in honour of Dundee’s history of scientific activities and of the RRS Discovery, Robert Falcon Scott’s Antarctic exploration vessel, which was built in Dundee and is now berthed at Discovery Point. Biomedical and technological industries have arrived since the 1980s, and the city now accounts for 10% of the United Kingdom’s digital entertainment industry.
Dundee is also one of the safest cities in the UK, ranked 2nd safest city in Scotland the Complete University Guide 2021.
The city is a good size, you don’t need to get public transport to go anywhere unlike most other cities. You can walk or cycle anywhere, and it’s close enough to nature that you can get out if you want to. There’s a great city life with pubs and clubs and everything.
Dundee is a hive for students both home and away, full of life, excitement and an abundance of eccentric bars and cosy snugs that create the perfect atmosphere for enjoying your favourite food and drink.
Dundee is at the heart of Scotland’s road and rail network and puts spectacular scenery, skiing, championship golf, mountain climbing, and sailing within easy reach.
The major cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow are a short trip away. Scotland’s four main international airports all operate both national airlines such as British Airways, and low cost airlines.
Previously known as the University of Abertay Dundee, Abertay is a modern university located right in the centre of Scotland’s fourth city, Dundee. In its current form, it dates back to 1994, though previously it had been the Dundee Institute of Technology, recognised as an “industrial university” as early as 1902. Today’s university continues to offer a range of vocationally driven, non-traditional courses.
All the buildings in the city centre are based within a quarter-mile of each other making it easy for students.

Abertay has a compact city centre campus right in the heart of Dundee. Our buildings blend the modern with the historic, with our Edwardian Old College giving a taste of the past and our Kydd Building housing specialist labs such as our Emergent Technology Centre, National Centre for Excellence in Computer Games and Scotland’s only industry-standard food science consumer research lab. Our award-winning and recently-refurbished Bernard King Library is a focal point for students, offering modern learning and collaboration spaces alongside a cafe and social areas.
