  • Cardiff, Welsh Caerdydd, city and capital of Wales. Cardiff exists as a city. It is located within the historic county of Glamorgan (Morgannwg) on the Bristol Channel at the mouth of the River Taff, about 150 miles (240 km) west of London. The origins of its name are a point of debate but are widely believed to have come from an English corruption of the original Welsh title Caer-Taff (Fort on the Taff).
  • Cardiff is the capital and largest city in Wales and the eleventh-largest city in the United Kingdom. The city is the country’s chief commercial centre, the base for most national cultural and sporting institutions, the Welsh national media, and the seat of the National Assembly for Wales.
  • The Cardiff metropolitan area makes up over a third of the total population of Wales.
  • Cardiff is a significant tourist centre and the most popular visitor destination in Wales.

  • Cardiff University was ranked 5th amongst UK universities in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) based on quality and is a member of the Russell Group, a group of 24 leading UK research-intensive universities.
  • Cardiff University was ranked as one of the world’s top 154 Universities by the QS World University Rankings 2019/20.
  • Its 26 academic schools are organised into three colleges: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Biomedical and Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences and Engineering.
  • The university is made up of two large campuses, both close to the centre of Cardiff. Heath Park, a mile to its north, is on the fringe of 100 acres of parkland and playing fields. With the exception of Pharmacy and Optometry, it houses the university’s healthcare schools, sharing the site with the University Hospital of Wales.
  • Study areas and IT facilities are open around the clock and, as well as libraries and lecture theatres, there is a swimming pool, fitness suite and squash court.
  • Cathays Park is the main campus and home to 22 of the university’s schools, as well as the main Student’s Union. Just half a mile from the city centre, it includes restaurants, shops, a nightclub and pubs.
