About Glasgow

Find out all about Glasgow

.
  • Glasgow is in west-central Scotland. It is situated along both banks of the River Clyde 20 miles (32 km) from that river’s mouth on the western, or Atlantic, coast. Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city, and it forms an independent council area that lies entirely within the historic county of Lanarkshire.
  • The city occupies much of the lower Clyde valley, and its suburbs extend into surrounding districts. Most important commercial and administrative buildings lie north of the Clyde
  • There is a wonderful array of restaurants and cafes in the city centre, while major cultural offerings include the Gallery of Modern Art, the showpiece Royal Concert Hall and the Theatre Royal.
  • Also worth exploring is the Merchant City whose 18th-century warehouses once bustled with cotton, tobacco and sugar traders. In the past two decades, the area has been regenerated with expensive designer shops, style bars and bijou cafes that give the Merchant City an air of sophistication.

Glasgow Caledonian University Facts

  • Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) was founded in 1993, after the merging of Glasgow Polytechnic with The Queen’s College.
  • The university is made up of three schools: the School of Engineering and Built Environment, Glasgow School for Business and Society, and School of Health and Life Sciences. GCU also has a presence in New York City and in Spitalfields in London, which offers postgraduate courses in fashion.
  • It is the only university to offer an Honours degree in Risk Management and its London-based school of fashion is the only one of its kind to offer an MBA in Luxury Brand Management.
  • The university’s practical approach has led to the development of teaching facilities such as a virtual hospital, broadcasting suite and a fashion factory.
  • It has a strong reputation for implementing effective widening access policies. Its award-winning initiative, The Caledonian Club, works with young people in Glasgow and London to tackle below average progression rates into higher education.
