About Manchester

Find out all about Manchester

.
  • Manchester, a city in the county of Greater Manchester urban county, northwestern England. Most of the city, including the historic core, is in the county of Lancashire, but it includes an area south of the River Mersey in the county of Cheshire.
  • The mid-20th century saw a decline in Manchester’s industrial importance, prompting a depression in social and economic conditions. Subsequent investment, gentrification, and rebranding from the 1990s onwards changed its fortunes.
  • Originally shaped by its success during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, Manchester’s strong, pioneering character endures today – only now its achievements also include shaking up the music scene, nurturing artistic creativity and hosting international sporting events.
  • A trip to Media City on Salford Quays is always a great day out, especially when the sun is shining as the waterfront is quite beautiful. This is the part of the city that has seen ITV and BBC move much of their operations to and it isn’t uncommon to see celebrities milling about. There are of course all manner of bars and restaurants for you to enjoy in the area and there is also the Imperial War Museum too, which acts as a beautiful backdrop to one of Manchester’s coolest new areas.

Manchester Metropolitan University Facts

  • Initially developed as a centre of Technology, Art and Design, the roots of Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) date back to 1824; it was founded as a University in 1992
  • Manchester itself is also a renowned hub for arts, culture and creativity, and is regularly ranked in the top spot as the best city to live in the UK by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Survey.
  • The university’s achievements are not just limited to creative disciplines though. MMU boasts the UK’s second-largest Business School.
  • Many of its degree courses include a year-long work placement with these organisations – something the university believes aids its high employment rate for graduates.
  • Based on two campuses, MMU is located in Manchester city centre with another site in the town of Crewe, in Cheshire. The university has made a significant capital investment in its infrastructure of late, giving rise to a new student’s union building, new laboratories, a £10million Exercise and Sport Science Centre, and a £6million contemporary arts centre on its Cheshire campus.
